Times of Transition

Times of Transition

Transitions are a reality - changes in people, in friends and acquaintances, in jobs, in family make up, in where we live and for some those transitions will take us to places where we can only imagine.  Many of us are familiar with the book of Joshua, it was a book about transitions, about crossing rivers and entering into promise lands, it speaks of promises as they relate to the past and the future, and encourages us that God has promised us that he would give to you and I every place where we set our feet.

When darrell and i first placed our feet on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines in 2006, we never thought or could even imagine where and how God would use us.  Initially our hearts were to share the gospel and teach people how to evangelize, little did we know that God would be using us in the area of providing horses to enable Tribal Pastors to be able to reach beyond their geographical borders, and to bring safe clean drinking water through the Bio Sand Water filters to Filipino people groups that have no access to safe clean water.

This past year we have seen God move in and through the ministry in such dynamic ways.  We continue to facilitate Evangelism Training Camps, introduced the Alpha Program, network with fellow missionaries and non profit ministries who are impacting the kingdom of God and the nation of the Philippines.  We are excited for the many ways that God has given us the ability to serve Him, and trust that God's provision for the future is the people we serve and to whom we minister.

"We need to look ahead to the those we serve as the focus of our Mission, and that alone will help us in our times of transition."

Darrell and I have totally supported our daily and personal living in Davao through our business, and in the past several years we have seen a decline in our clientele due to a week economy and some unforeseen circumstances beyond our control.  We have continued to depend and trust the Lord in and through this time of transition. Over the past year, we have seen Gods hand moving us forward in faith to begin trusting the Lord for full time support to continue doing the work of the Lord here in the Philippines. This is a big step of faith, as we haven't been able to rely on our business income this past year.    As we reflect on how God has provided for us through the past years,  we can only stand in awe of How he has taken care of us here on the field.  Now in this transition time of ministry we have seen Gods hand beginning to move us away from being a tent maker ministry which , in general a tentmaker refers to the activities of any Christian who, while functioning as a minister, receives little or no pay for his or her church or ministry work, and supports him or herself by additional, unrelated work.  It is our prayer that as we move forward that God would speak to the hearts of those who will stand together with us in prayer believing with us for God to continue to bless the work of the Lord in the Philippines, and to be Gods hands extended to the lost, thirsty, hungry and dying.

We extended our sincere heartfelt thankfulness and appreciation to everyone who has invested into the ministry and realize that this could not be done without your generous love and support and abundant prayers.

Prayer Requests:
  • God will open doors to ministry while we are here in North America

  • We are currently home in Canada due to an illness with a family member, please pray that God would use us to bring wisdom and comfort.

  • For the ministry team in the Philippines, for their safety, health and provision.

  • The rainy season has taken its toll on the nipa roofs at the ministry center.  Cost is $500.00

  • Personal provision while home on furlough and for our return tickets back to the Philippines.

  • That we would be used by God to minister to family, friends and to be an encouragement to the body of Christ while we are home.

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. (Hebrews 10:23 NLT)

I woke up at 5:00 am with this clear word about Holding Fast. In searching the scriptures,  I was reminded of Hebrews 10:23 which commands us to " Hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm,  for God can be trusted to keep his promise."  (NLT)

In the original Greek, holding fast means not only to embrace, but to embrace with force as if someone is trying to take something from you. In other words, you need to have a firm grip or we are going to lose out!  We are suppose to hold fast to our profession, our declaration of faith.

Sometimes in life we feel like we are in a tug of war with the enemy, like he is trying to pull the rope out of our hands, and how does the enemy try and do this?  He does this by getting you to speak negative words of doubt and unbelief, by dwelling on those things that are of a negative report, the list goes on...

"Therefore, my brothers,  whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord,  my beloved."
Philippians 4:1 ( ESV)

We all know that in a tug a war it is important to stand firm, to tighten your grip, and most of all " Don't let go!"  if we want to win the game.

And so it is true with standing firm in the Lord, especially when we feel the enemy is pulling hard at the word that has been planted in our hearts.

We are reminded that in order to stand firm in the Lord it will  require us to dig our heals deeper into Gods word, and hold fast to God words, but most assuredly, "DON"T LET GO!"  of Gods word."  We must hide Gods word in our hearts. ( Psalms 119:11)

Lord today I ask that you would help us to keep speaking your words of faith & hope,  help us to keep declaring your word and most of all help us to HOLD FAST!

Dear God, today we choose to HOLD FAST to you, knowing that whenever you begin a good work in us you will always be faithful to complete what you have started.

( This is a promise we know we can HOLD ONTO! )  amen!

The Lord showed me today while in a conversation with a friend, a picture of a "Spiritual Tsunami".  In the picture I could see God was realigning areas in people’s lives which would literally rearrange the very foundations and structures in their lives that they had put their trust into.  He is removing the stuff in our lives that have taken our eyes off what God wants to do in our lives, family, friends, church and ministry.  He is washing away those things that have cluttered our lives to be effective workers for the Lord.

As the water subsided, what was left were the structures and foundations that remained. They would now become the pillars of the rebuilding He wants to do in and through His church. The Lord reminded me that the foundation of our lives is the everlasting covenant of His love towards us and not His judgment.
For the Lord "HE IS GOOD!" and His love endures "FOREVER!" His "FAITHFULNESS" continues through "ALL" generations.

"Hold fast to the Lord and DON"T LET GO!
He is going to bring you thru to the other side.”

Tribal Pastor Grads - April 2011

In April we held a Tribal Pastors horsemanship training.   Tim and Gloria from Hope Mountain, along with 5 of their tribal pastors, and another pastor from Kalaganan joined us. tribal pastor learning horsemanshipWhat a great group  of pastors!  They were so enthusiastic to learn and develop their horsemanship skills and horse care.  It was evident that these Pastors had a desire to learn.

It was exciting to present the tribal pastors with Cebuano New Testaments that were financed by some very special people back home.

Special Guest - Ron Nelson

It was great to have Ron Nelson ( Darrell's father ) with us.  Ron spoke at several churches throughout the Philippines along with being the guest speaker and teacher at the Philippine Christian Institute of Christian Ministry in Bohol. Ron finished his last leg of his Ron Nelsontravel to be with us in Davao, where he spoke at several churches.  The power of God moved and many were touched and healed in their bodies.  One church said that they had never experienced that level of excitement and power of God in their church before.  Ron also participated in our last Horsemanship training as well as a trip to install two bio Bio Sand Water Filtersand water filters. We were so blessed to have dad here with us. Dad said that his trip was very full and rewarding and reminded him of earlier ministry days here in the Philippines.

Living Waters Asia - Davao City

Darrell  had the opportunity to speak for Living Waters Asia, " The Way of the Master Conference" in Davao.  Many people were encouraged by his testimony and experiences in Evangelism. It was a great opportunity for us to network with  other ministries.  Dennis, from Living Waters Asia, said that he would like to work with us in the future. We thank the Lord for this opportunity, as this is our heart to see souls saved!

ANCF May Missions Month

May was "Missions Month" at All Nations Christian Fellowship, Davao City. Darrell spoke about what God is doing in our ministry and inspired the church to personal evangelism.  People were engaged with Darrell's humor and passion for evangelism. Within the week we were commissioned to conduct a evangelism mini-boot camp in July.  We are excited about this up-coming event. We've begun the process of printing more ice-breaker Gospel tracks and training materials.  Pray for God's compassion for the lost to be en grained into the hearts of His people.

Alpha Course

ANCF Alpha CourseWe are  thankful that God has used us to introduce the ALPHA COURSE to the leadership of ANCF, Davao City.  In April they started the program with their young adults and it has been an absolute success!  One of the home groups has begun the course last Thursday.

Evangelism Mini-Boot Camp

July we will be conducting a 3 day evangelism mini-boot camp with ANCF. They are so charged with the call to the Great Commission. We are currently printing more Gospel tracks and materials. Please keep this event in your prayers.

BACK IN THE SADDLE - Jan/Feb Newsletter

Published in

Darrell and I arrived safely home to the Philippines January 7th after a long 16 hour flight from Vancouver.  How nice it was for us to come back to our home in Davao and have everything in its place and ready for a much needed sleep. We have adjusted quickly to the time change and climate, in fact the Philippines has been experiencing a bit of cold weather, which is unusual.  24 Celsius requires an extra layer of clothes, unlike the -0 weather that we came from.  If this is any sign of what is to come then I think we need to prepare for some extremely hot weather.

January 21st we made the journey back to the bukid to see the status of the horses and property. What a delight to see 5 new foals; this includes 3 yearlings, 3 mares and our stallion Ben.  We will be purchasing 4 new horses and are extremely grateful for those that have sponsored these horses back home in Canada.

We are waiting anxiously for the 8 balikbayan boxes that we shipped with horse Tack.  This is the most tack that we have sent in one shipping and we couldn't have done it without the generosity of the people who donated horse tack and sponsors who helped with the shipping of these boxes. The Lord bless you!

Cebuano New Testaments

This past January we had the opportunity to purchase Cebuano New Testaments, from our good friends at SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics)  here in Davao, who had given us the opportunity to purchase the bibles at an outstanding price. Once I heard about this opportunity I immediately put this on Facebook, and to God be the Glory 15 boxes / 900 bibles were sponsored

We look forward to distributing the bibles to Tribal Pastors and members of their churches in the mountains, and we are grateful for those that desire to see the Word of God brought to the Lumad/native group of indigenous people of the southern Philippines, and to those who have given their lives to translate the bible.

Just recently I received this email from my friend from SIL.

"What is awesome?? - When someone has given their life to translate God's Word into a language most people have never heard of, then someone else dedicating their life to His work comes to get that book and takes it to those people who speak that minority language so they can hear God speaking their language! I just love to see those Books go out!"  - Lorin Janes

Partnership:

Cross Culture Ministries is blessed to be able to partner with Hope Mountain Center for Transformation, which focuses on holistic ministries that include theological education, agricultural training, livelihood training, mission’s mobilization, medical missions and children's ministries.  Just recently Darrell and I had the opportunity to visit our good friends Pastor Tim & Gloria Hagquist who are the developmental coordinators of the Hope Mountain facility here in Davao.  Last year three of their tribal pastors and an agricultural intern from the U.S. took the five-day horsemanship training at our Cross Cultural Ministries facility in Valencia City, Bukidnon.  They had expressed the great need there is for the training of Tribal pastor/farmers to properly care for their horses. To this date 8 of their Tribal Pastors have received training through the Basic Horsemanship Program; we look forward to teaching more of their Tribal Pastors in the near future. What a tremendous blessing this couple is to us, we appreciate their friendship and their mentorship to us in helping us to better understand Tribal people and their culture.

March 22 we will be attending "Powerful Parnterships for Expanding the Kingdom" hosted by Tim & Gloria at Hope Mountain.  It is an invitational event where 2 highly esteemed Christian business men who have worked internationally with Christian ministries and non-profits share their business and organizational skills to enhance ministry and impact this world for God's glory.  We are very grateful  for the invitation, and excited to attend this event!

At one of the Bible Studies we attend in Davao, we were introduced to David Pike a "Natural Horseman Trainer" from Texas.  We had no idea we had a "horse whisperer" in Davao :)  This type of training we had been praying to do for some time! The second week of February we took David to our ministry center and were amazed at his skills in training horses...  He even had some of our horses loading into the truck by themselves - the first time Pastor Blas and Nonoy had ever seen such a thing.  Nonoy was so eager to learn more!
Watching David at work with the horses was truly an inspiration to us, and such an affective method.  All through out the training we could see the parallel of how the four main keys can be implemented into our Christian lives and relationships.

As we send out this newsletter David with his wife Ruby are at the ministry center helping train Nonoy our horseman in Natural Horsemanship Training.  The method is based on respect and love - and a understanding of horse nature and psychology – the Natural horsemanship method enables anyone at any level to have fun with horses and achieve amazing results...naturally. This training avoids using force, fear, harsh bits or mechanical training aids in favor of love, language and leadership all in equal doses. The Four Keys  and basic principles of Natural Horsemanship can be summed up in four words: Relationship, Understanding, Communication, and Trust.

Dad's Coming to the Philippines :)

As many of you know, dad arrives in the Philippines March 16th.  He will be ministering in Cebu/Bohol before he comes to Davao on April 2.  Then on April 3rd he will be ministering at All Nations Christian Fellowship here in Davao City and the following weeks he will be at the ministry center in the Bukidnon.  We are currently waiting for confirmation for our next Tribal Horsemanship Training Program anytime between April 4-22nd, where we will be training up to 8 tribal pastors and assigning 5 horses.

The last week of April we are trusting God for provision to be able to travel to Cebu with dad to have our annual CCMPI board meeting and take dad to the Cebu International Airport on May 3rd for his trip back to Canada.

We are really looking forward to dad coming!

"God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped his people and continue to help them."  ~ Hebrew 6:10

Cross Culture Ministries could not continue to do the work of the Lord with out your help. May the Lord richly repay you for your part in this work, and for all your faithful love and prayers. Please continue to pray for us here in the Philippines and join us in believing for Gods' provision to cover our expenses and for health and safety.

Time flys so quickly - in 3 weeks I depart from Vancouver International Airport to the Philippines.

It's an exciting time for me to return to the place where God called Bernice and I almost 3 decades ago. I am looking forward to everything that God has in store, and to see Gods mighty hand move upon people’s lives.

Also, we've included the last newsletter below :)

March 16 to May 3, 2011!

My first part of the journey will be in Cebu where I will be connecting with our many friends of the ministry over the past 28 years.  I look forward to meeting with the "Golden Girls" who were graduates of our Mini-Bible School back in the early 80's, their lives have touched countless people throughout the Philippines.
I will ministering together again with Pastor Roque Cagas Sr. who was the AOG superintendant for over 40 years.  I am excited to reunite and minister once again with Pastor Rey Margallo from the PICM Bible School in Sagbayan, Bohol where I will be lecturing several classes and will be the Graduation speaker for 2011.

The first week of April I will be traveling and speaking in Butuan, Mindanao with Sis Anita, then meeting Darrell & Shannon in Davao City, Mindanao.  A few days in Davao and then we're off to our ministry center in the heart of Mindanao, Valencia City.  Darrell & Shannon are setting up a Tribal Pastors Basic Horsemanship Training Program where I'll be ministering to the Tribal Pastors and assigning more horses to the pastors.  We will also be installing bio-sand water filters and touching many lives with the Gospel of Good News.  An EXCITING TIME!!!

The last week of April I will be departing from Darrell & Shannon's home in Davao and returning to Cebu where I will be meeting with our Cross-Culture Ministries Philippines, Inc. board of trustees, and take few days of rest before the long flight back to Canada to return home May 3, 2011.

What a blessing to have my airfare supplied with all the travel points that Bernice and I have acquired!  Please keep this ministry trip in your prayers for both safety and health (that the Lord would keep Bernice in good health while I am away and for protection in my travels) and for the financial provision needed for my expenses while in the Philippines.

I am looking forward to everything that God has in store, and to see Gods mighty hand move upon people’s lives.

Happy New Year! You're Invited...

The Christian life is a journey. On this journey, we are travelling with God and we are travelling in faith. On this journey, God has a plan for us. It is His perfect plan. He wants us to grow – in our knowledge of Him, in our faith in Him, in our love for Him.

The end of our furlough here in Canada is near!  January 5th we return back to the Philippines, and I can honestly say that this part of our journey comes with the sorrow that most missionaries feel when leaving there loved ones and friends.
It also come with a new level and trust and faith for what God has planned for the future and for the work of Cross Culture Ministries,  we are believing for the Impossible not only in the ministry but in the lives of our family, friends and loved ones.

"In normal life we hardly realize how much more we receive than we give, and life cannot be rich without such gratitude. It is so easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements compared with what we owe to the help of others."

As we approach 2011 and reflect on all God has done this past year we know that this could not have been achieved without the many prayers and help of so many people. “We feel such gratitude to the Lord  for way He has touched the hearts of those to be a part of this ministry.

You are so important to us!

Since arriving home for furlough on August 26th I have experienced the joy of seeing my family and friends and the pleasure of making new ones, but coming home has also been one of the most trying times financially for us. I found myself having to trust the Lord at a whole new level that I have never experienced before.  In my devotion time I was directed to the scripture -

"And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness— secret riches.
I will do this so you may know the I am the LORD,
the God of Israel, the one that calls you by name.
"
Isaiah 45:3

In the previous verse (Isaiah 45:2) the Lord reminded Cyrus that He would go before him and level the mountains. Believe me there are a few mountains that I would like levelled. Through these dark periods in our lives we are reminded that they are to be treasures from God. They are actually riches stored in secret places. God is ruler over light and darkness, over good times and bad. Our lives are sprinkled with both types of experiences, and both are needed for us to grow spiritually. We don't always see those times in this light because they are often accompanied with pain and fear that prevents us from accepting these times as treasures.

I am learning that through each difficult situation God is showing his mercy, that I can experience breakthroughs in my life,  so God can demonstrate His faithfulness and receive all the glory and honor. I know that I can trust God to meet the deepest needs in my life. He wants us to know that we are " called by name." Every hair of our head is numbered. Every activity we are involved in He knows and His love for you and me has knows no bounds, he will take every opportunity to demonstrate this to you and me.

If you feel you are in a place of darkness, trust the Lord today and allow Him to reveal the hidden treasures that can be found. Let Him call you by name.
